Seven Good Books I’m Reading Now or Recommend

If you read my newsletter (or see this page), you’ll know that I’m a poly-reader. I read several books at a time. Here are a few I’m working on right now.

Recommended

  1. SELF-EDITING FOR FICTION WRITERS by Renni Browne and Dave King. This editing bible is always on my list.
  2. THE ART OF CHARACTER: CREATING MEMORABLE CHARACTER FOR FICTION, FILM AND TV by David Corbett. Thorough study of the most important elements of fiction. I’m working my way through it. It’s weighty and worthwhile.
  3. FINISH YOUR BOOK IN THREE DRAFTS: HOW TO WRITE A BOOK, REVISE A BOOK, AND COMPLETE A BOOK WHILE YOU STILL LOVE IT by Stuart Horwitz
  4. READING LIKE A WRITER: A GUIDE FOR PEOPLE WHO LOVE BOOKS AND FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO WRITE THEM by Francine Prose. I’m reading it now and learning about the writing craft.
  5. SOON: AN OVERDUE HISTORY OF PROCRASTINATION, FROM LEONARD AND DARWIN TO YOU AND ME by Andrew Santella. I’m reading it now. Fascinating and lots of fun, and certainly appropriate for me.

Reading Now:

  1. THE WRITING CLASS, A Novel by Jincy Willett. Recommended by Lori Rader-Day, a mystery writer I enjoy, so I’m thinking this will be fun. About an author who teaches.
  2. MAY DAY by Jess Lourey. The first of Lourey’s Mira James mysteries is very funny and beautifully written.

Bonus: I just finished DESERT JADE by C.J. Shane. If you want a good, suspenseful read with lots of great info about Tucson, the Tohono O’odam Nation, border issues and more, check it out. This is the first in her Letty Valdez mystery series.
