Saturday night my husband and I joined around 750 other souls at Boise’s historic and beautifully preserved Egyptian Theatre to be part of the 8th Annual Xtreme Christmas Xtravaganza, a fundraiser for the Interfaith Sanctuary. What a great way to celebrate solstice and welcome longer days!
It was an incredible, joyous Xperience. The evening is hosted by Curtis Stigers, a Boisean who’s made it big in the world of music. He sings, he composes, he plays the saxophone, the drums and even the gourd! And he gives back to his community in a big way. Each year (and this year for three nights!) he is joined by other southern Idaho musicians, professionals and amateurs, to entertain and raise money for what I learned is the only shelter in the U.S. for the homeless run by an interfaith coalition.
The talent we have in our relatively small community is amazing. We heard voices from high school to, well, those gifted with more years. We heard rock, blues, country, a cappela, bands, solo. They were all terrific! Every one of those people, supported by a large number of local businesses, donated their time and tremendous abilities to help the homeless of our community. We were proud to be Boiseans.
How does your community celebrate and share?
Now, if you are desperate for a last-minute gift to wrap, or something to take to a holiday gathering, here’s one idea: Cinnamon Pecans. Fast, yummy and easy.
Cinnamon Pecans
- 2 egg whites
- 2 Tbsp. cinnamon
- 1 lb. pecan halves
- 1 c. sugar
- 1/2 tsp. salt
Preheat oven to 250 degrees F. Beat egg whites until foamy but not stiff. Stir in the sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Stir in pecan halves. Spread on greased cookie sheet. Bake at 250 degrees for 1 hour, stirring 3 or 4 times.
Makes 1 pound of delicious Cinnamon Pecans.
My very warmest wishes to you and yours for a joyous holiday and a prosperous New Year of adventure!
